Silage wrap and pit covers are not targeted by plans to restrict single-use plastics because they are already being recycled.
EU legislation and the Government’s new Climate Action Plan include bans and levies on various categories of disposable plastic products, which are made from fossil fuels and cause litter and pollution.
However, when it comes to farm plastic, a spokesperson for the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment told the Irish Farmers Journal that the EU’s Plastic Strategy recommends schemes that place the responsibility of waste treatment on producers. “Ireland already has such a scheme in place and it is operated by Irish Farm Films Producers’ Group (IFFPG).”
