Live exports have been suspended by the Department of Agriculture ahead of highs of 27°C forecast for Thursday.
“In light of the weather warnings in Europe the Department is not allowing the transport of ruminants by road into or through, continental Europe from tomorrow morning, for the rest of this week,” a Department spokesperson said. At least four loads of calves were due to leave on Tuesday for Spain, but the Irish Farmers Journal understands exporters were told on Monday that a halt would be put on exports until the weather cools. There are about 300 calves in a load. Calves could be allowed to travel on Friday, but until then they will be kept at assembly centres.
Met Éireann has issued a status yellow warning for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick today, Thursday, because of high temperatures.
