The Irish Farmers Journal understands that long-standing members of the Kepak KK Club are being told that bulls over 16 months of age are now not eligible or wanted for the KK Club.
If confirmed, this would be a significant development as it would mean farmers buying bull weanlings would not be letting stock out for a second grazing season. Instead, they would be keeping them indoors for intensive finishing to get them fit for slaughter at under 16 months of age.
Earlier in the year, we reported that the Kepak Group had temporarily suspended its KK Beef Club heifer-finishing business. At the time, Kepak said the move stemmed from difficult marketing conditions for heifers, with a review planned, and that bulls were unaffected.
