DEAR SIR: I see in the Irish Farmers Journal that the BEAM beef support scheme will include dairy farmers with less than 40 cows; I think that’s a good idea. I am delighted to see that 5,216 dairy farmers are in this category and that makes up 29% of dairy farms. Fair play to them if they want to milk – that’s good. With all the hype about dairy expansion and the drive for 100 cows plus, it’s great to see that dairy farmers with smaller dairy herds still exist. Also it’s great that the powers that be have recognised small dairy farms.
