With a new wave of protests under way, IFA President Joe Healy has said meat plants should give an immediate price increase to farmers. He believes that recent improvement to European market conditions means there is now room for better beef prices.

"Further talks on the basis that beef price cannot be discussed and without money on the table from the Minister would be a complete waste of time. We will be lobbying to ensure that Irish farmers are protected on what is the biggest issue facing farming in our lifetime.”

Brexit

The IFA has set out four demands which they hope will create security for beef farmers.

  • Immediate ban on all substandard South American beef imports.
  • Further fund to compensate farmers who supplied cattle after the 12 May cut off point for the previous support measure.
  • A €1bn Brexit fund of market supports and direct aid for farmers.
  • An EU campaign to promote environmentally sustainable beef production.
  • Healy added: “With less than 70 days to Brexit we need the Minister and the EU to spell out what they are going to do to support farmers through Brexit. IFA has secured €100m, but a lot more will be needed.”
