There was a strong variation in prices for bullocks at Skibbereen Mart last week, with in-spec and younger stock meeting excellent demand.
Trade was on fire for spring 2018-born bullocks. Any around 450kg were commanding prices of between €2.02/kg and €2.47/kg, with farmers competing strongly for stock, which went a long way in driving demand. Prices for bullocks around 30 months were under pressure, with best demand for in-spec stock.
The weanling and cull cow trade remains relatively stable. Fleshed Friesian cows were making €1.15/kg to €1.30/kg, while up to €1.65/kg was available for suckler culls and a shade more for younger cows. Lighter weanlings sold well, with those under 350kg doing best.

Speaking after the sale, mart manager Tom McCarthy said: “Things were positive for the most part. People are prepared to pay for the right cattle and it showed with young cattle in demand. It was a tougher day out for short-stay cattle, as it has been for the last few weeks.
“Strong grass availability has driven the trade this summer and there has been a lot of fodder made, so farmers are anxious to buy and that has kept a floor under things.”
Commission rates for adult cattle are €1.5% to the seller with an entry fee of €2.50 and a minimum charge of €9.50/head and €9 to the buyer.
