Camera at the Mart was in attendance at the UK’s premier sale of breeding rams on Friday last.
The annual Kelso ram sale is widely recognised as the largest single sale of breeding rams in the UK and attracts buyers from all corners of the region.

The first sale was held in 1838 and has only been cancelled twice – in 2001 and 2007 due to Foot and Mouth disease.
This year, there was a total of 5,152 rams entered for sale between shearling animals and ram lambs, down by 400 head on last year.

By the end of the day’s trading, 4,191 rams were sold, with 382 animals not forwarded and 579 marked down as unsold, giving a clearance rate of 81%.
While fewer rams were sold compared with last year, the sale average was up by £17, with Friday’s sale recording an average price of £698/head across all breeds.

Topping the sale was a Bluefaced Leicester shearling which made £15,000, while the top-priced Bluefaced ram lamb sold for £1,700. The breed sold to an average of £968 for shearlings and £616 for ram lambs.

Texels averaged £975/head, with shearlings reaching a top price of £8,500 and ram lambs selling to £4,000.
Suffolk shearlings peaked at £4,500 and sold to an average of £789/head. Suffolk ram lambs were in demand, with 250 head averaging £475/head and a top price of £6,000 paid.

Beltex shearlings averaged £726/head and sold to a top price of £6,000, with ram lambs selling to £1,000.
Charollais rams averaged £483 for shearlings, with a top price of £1,000. Ram lambs sold to £820.

This Bluefaced Leicester sold for £450.
Crossbred tups
There were 598 crossbred tups on offer and they sold to an average of £580/head, with a peak of £3,200.

This Bluefaced Leicester tup sold for £850.
There were 69 Llyens sold to an average of £540/head, with a top price of £1,100 paid.
North Country Cheviots reached a peak of £1,500 and sold to an average of £611/head for 28 animals, with 10 Vendéen tups averaging £607/head and a top price of £720 paid.

This Suffolk tup sold for £750.
Throughout the sale, a total of 3,675 shearling rams were sold to an average of £728/head, with 516 ram lambs selling to an average of £484.
