Last Monday’s special weanling bull show and sale at Kilfenora Mart saw a strong entry of over 270 weanling bulls on offer, which were met with a very good trade.

Mart manager Martin McNamara said that it was refreshing to see such a strong trade with the current air of doom and gloom that is going around in the beef sector.

He added that the main drivers of the current trade are exporters, who are placing a firm floor under the price of lighter bulls. Martin said that farmer buyers were active also, mainly for good-quality continentals from 320kg to 380kg.

There were only a handful of heavy bulls over 500kg on offer and these were met with good demand. Again, quality was the main driver of prices, with heavy feeding bulls selling to €1,125 or €2.21/kg. A plain 500kg bull sold for €1.91/kg.

Bulls from 450kg to 500kg were low in numbers also. The top price in this weight range was €1,150 for 470kg or €2.45/kg, with other good-quality types making from €1,000 to €1,050/head.

There were some plainer types on offer also, which were met with a little more mixed demand and sold for just under the €1,000/head mark.

Bulls from 400kg to 450kg sold for €900/head on average, with better-quality bulls making up to €2.41/kg. The main farmer demand was for bulls from 320kg to 380kg suitable to be castrated and run as steers. Farmer activity was quite strong for these, but the main opposition was from exporters for bulls suitable for the export markets.

Bulls from 320kg to 380kg sold for just over €870/head or €2.52/kg. At the upper end of weights, those from 360kg to 380kg sold mainly from €850, with the tops selling to €1,100/head. At the lower end of the weights, those from 320kg to 340kg sold mainly from €720 to €970/head, with prices averaging at €842/head.

Bulls from 250kg to 300kg sold for close to €775/head, with some plainer types making less than €650/head.

Martin said that, again, farmers and exporters were the main source of demand for these. Fancy types in the same weight range sold from €860 to €955/head or for up to €3.18/kg.

Commission rates are 1.4% to the seller to a maximum of €13 for singles and 1.2% to a maximum of €11 for doubles, and €9 to the buyer.
