The Irish Hereford Breed Society hosted its premier sale in Tullamore over the weekend, with a tough day of trading for both bulls and heifers. It is thought much of this is down to a number of other highly successful production sales for the breed over the past two months.

Bulls were first into the ring, but less than 30% of the 35 animals forward found new homes. Top of these was a price of €4,000 for Tom Brennan’s Balleen Wayfair. This stylish young bull is a son of Towra Brilliant and is out of the homebred cow Balleen Maeve 795.

David Larkin was next in line when two of his bulls sold for €3,800 and €3,500. These two March 2018-born bulls are sons of the herd’s stock bull Cedar Liam.

Taking the overall male championship was Griananpoll 1 Starman, which sold for €3,000. Bred by Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald, Starman is sired by homebred Grianan Parker and is out of the successful Orange family line.

Awarded the reserve male championship under judge Albert De Cogan was Kye Robert 829 from Padraig McGrath, Elphin, Co Roscommon. This April 2018-born bull is sired by Glaslough Rooney and is out of the Free Town Hotspur daughter Kye Holly 644. Having failed to meet his reserve in the ring, he later sold for €3,300.

Heifers

On to the females and unfortunately it was a similar story in terms of clearance rate, with only five of the 23 heifers on offer meeting trade. Topping this was a €3,500 call for John Appelbe’s heifer Appel 1 Super Star. This stylish heifer is sired by former national champion and herd stock bull Solpoll 1 Lawman.
