Ireland and Finland have the best quality waters in Europe, according to a European Commission study.

Results from both countries show the majority of ground water, 88% and 97% respectively, is classified in the lower and favourable quartile, with low nitrate results.

The results from both countries suggest that no water is in the highest category, which has a nitrate reading over 50mg/l.

Germany, Denmark, Belgium, UK and the Netherlands show the highest scores in the greater than 50 mg/l category, with the proportion of their results in the high category at 28%, 16%, 15%, 12% and 11% respectively.

For a full breakdown of the results, see page 24 of our Dairy Day publication, free inside this week’s Irish Farmers Journal.
