The Department of Agriculture has launched a climate action consultation and is inviting farmers and members of the public to take part.

Agriculture accounts for a third of all Irish emissions and the Department has repeated its commitment to reducing emissions.

Reducing emissions

“The All-of-Government Climate Action plan contains an emissions reduction target of 10% to 15% for agriculture, bringing emissions to be between 17.5 and 19 Mt in 2030,” the Department stated.

“The sector will also contribute to the removal of 26.8Mt CO2 from the atmosphere through afforestation and new ways of managing land.”

The consultation document is called, Ag-Climatise, a National Climate & Air Roadmap for the Agriculture Sector to 2030 and Beyond.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said the roadmap contains three elements.

I. Implementing changes now: examples of proposed actions include adoption of low-emission slurry spreading equipment and changes in fertiliser type.

II. Acting in partnership: to be successful, all stakeholders, from farm to fork, will have to contribute in a spirit of partnership, bearing in mind a the need for a just transition.

III. Preparing for the future: using the best available science to inform policy development and to help stakeholders make strategic choices for the future.

“I would really welcome farmer views in developing this plan. We will listen to farmers and take on board their views as we finalise the roadmap over the coming months,” Minister Creed said.

“By working together, implementing practical changes on farm, we can secure the family farm for generations to come.’’

The consultation is open until Friday 10 January 2020.
