Over 50 sheep in Togher, Co Louth, were attacked by dogs and one remains missing since last weekend.

It is the second time the flock – owned by Damian Hanratty – has been attacked by unleashed dogs.

The Cooley area of Co Louth recorded more sheep attacks last year than any other county.

In 2018, 31 dogs were seized after sheep attacks. Five fines were issued to dog owners as a result of sheep worrying, while 10 dogs were impounded for the same reason. The number of dogs caught in the act and were shot on sight was seven.

Figures for 2019 are looking about the same as 2018 at this point

Neighbouring county, Monaghan, recorded 14 attacks last year.

Brendan Smyth MVB, Monaghan county veterinary officer, said: “Figures for 2019 are looking about the same as 2018 at this point.”

Leitrim County Council had nine official reports of livestock attacks and four fines issued to owners. Wicklow County Council received 11 reports of sheep worrying.

IFA sheep chair Seán Dennehy warned dog owners to “lock up your dogs at night and know where they are at every moment”.
