Over 300 students took part in Agri Aware’s farm walk and talk sustainability event in Gurteen Agricultural College, Co Tipperary, on Monday 2 March. It is one of a series of events that will take place until Friday 13 March.

The events will focus on the sustainability of Irish agriculture. The aim is to allow students to gain a practical insight into Irish farming through a range of visits to Teagasc farms, UCD Lyons farm and the Irish Farmers Journal's Tullamore Farm.

Students will get an accurate insight into what a real working farm is like

At the event, Agri Aware executive director Marcus O’Halloran said: “There are a lot of myths out there about Irish farming and food production but through these events students will get an accurate insight into what a real working farm is like while learning about key topics and information that are relevant to the Leaving Cert course.”

He pointed out the necessity of farming to the students and said: “We all would be lost without agriculture, as without it we wouldn’t have food or clothing.”

He encouraged the students to consider a career in agriculture even if they have never been on a farm before. “It is a diverse industry with lots of opportunities with almost 170,000 people employed in the sector in Ireland,” he said.
