Almost as if we'd forgetten about it, Brexit came crashing back into focus this week after the UK government hinted it is prepared to break the Withdrawal Agreement.
In this week’s Down to Agribusiness podcast, agribusiness editor Lorcan Allen and EU and markets specialist Phelim O’Neill discuss the rising tensions on both sides of the Brexit talks. Boris Johnson certainly ratched up the apprehension levels this week in both London and Brussels after it emerged the UK government was preparing to undermine keyparts of the Withdrawal Treaty agreed last year by introducing new legislation in the House of Commons called the Internal Market Bill.
On Tuesday, the UK’s secretary of state for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, openly admitted in the House of Commons that the Internal Markets bill would be a breach of international laws.
But is this all just sabre rattling and posturing as the October deadline for the completion of the Brexit negotiations draws nearer? We discuss the political brinksmanship as part of this week’s podcast.
