The Irish Farmers Journal understands that Glanbia Co-op chair Martin Keane has signalled his intention to step down.

His decision was communicated to the Glanbia Co-op board at a hastily-convened board meeting on Monday evening. We understand he will remain on the co-op's board.

Earlier on Monday morning, Glanbia PLC announced that Donard Gaynor will replace Keane effective from Thursday 8 October.

The co-op's virtual annual general meeting takes place on Monday.

In a statement, a Glanbia spokesperson said in line with its relationship with Glanbia Co-operative, it is appointing Gaynor as chair in place of Keane from 8 October.

Keane will remain on the board of Glanbia PLC until his normal retirement at the 2021 AGM.

Gaynor has been on the PLC's board since March 2013 and will be chair until no later than the 2022 AGM, at which point he will have served nine years on the board.
