While apprenticeships have been around for years, there is a lot more to the range on offer in Ireland than you might first think. They are no longer limited to a trade job – eg builders, mechanics etc – there is a vast range of career paths just waiting to be taken.

“There are actually 62 career options available through apprenticeship and they span levels five to ten. Now, a level 10 on the qualifications framework is doctorate level,” says Dr Fiona Maloney.

There are over 8,000 employers across the country (in partnership with SOLAS, the state agency on further education in Ireland) in the delivery of apprenticeship programmes. You need to have an employer to do an apprenticeship programme.

“The key thing for learners or for students coming in is what you are developing are work-ready skills and you’re going out on a competitive salary,” Dr Maloney says. “You’re in the labour market and seen as skilled, work-ready and competent in your area. And you are getting a world-class, hands-on education through the apprenticeship programme.”

According to the website there will be agri-apprenticeships coming soon, with Farm Management Level 7, Farm Technician Level 6 and Sportsturf Management Level 6. There is also an equine apprenticeship under development with a level 7 in Stud Farm Assistant Manager. Horticulture is getting a Horticulture Level 6 in Applied Horticulture.

The duration of an apprenticeship is two to four years and a wage will be paid – albeit reduced – but it is an ideal opportunity for those already in the workforce to continue to earn while they are learning.
