DEAR EDITOR: I want to write to explain why it is so important to take care of your cows. I love cows. They are a native animal to Ireland, but they can be hard to take care of.

You have to care for both the cows and their calves when they’re little. You have to feed the calves night and day and also milk the cows twice a day.

Every spring, more and more calves are born. This year, on our farm, we had a heifer calf that was born on St Brigid’s Day, so we called her Brigid.

It is hard to feed the calves, because they are always pushing and shoving each other.

It’s important to give the calves milk, but they also need clean straw to sleep on. We keep them in little groups to keep them healthy and give them space to play, and when they’re big enough, we let them go outside on the grass.

Milking

It’s important to take good care of your cows by milking and walking them also – you have to get them to the places around the farm where they eat fresh grass. They need to be milked two times a day. If you don’t milk them, their udders will get sore.

The best thing about farming is that you can enjoy nature and take care of animals at the same time. I farm with my dad and sometimes my mom, grandad or my uncle. My two sisters like to help too, but they are a bit too little yet for some jobs.

Our two dogs, Ben and Chase, help us with the farmwork and my dad says our cat, Zehera, is the farm’s pest control manager (she’s really good at hunting).

DEAR EDITOR: I love horses. Horses are my favourite animals. You can have horses for pets or for a hobby, but there is a lot of work involved in caring for them.

Horses need to be cared for seven days a week. For example, you have to muck out their stables every day. Horses need to be fed three times a day too.

Training

You have to keep your horse fit and you have to train them. For example, you can walk, trot, canter or gallop, and you can also jump with your horse.

Hooves

Caring for your horse’s hooves and fitting them with horseshoes is very important. The blacksmith needs to come regularly. You need to take care of horse’s hooves. You need to make sure your horse does not get pigeon feet as well, because this damages the joints in their legs.
