With the first modern anaerobic digestion (AD) plants now under construction, Ireland’s fledgling biomethane sector appears to be taking off.

However, many questions remain about what this industry will look like, as well as the opportunities and potential risks for farmers.

Biomethane was a key talking point at this year’s National Ploughing Championships in Scregan, Tullamore, where multiple AD developers were in attendance, alongside semi-State body Gas Networks Ireland (GNI).

The Irish Farmers Journal spoke with Padraig Flemming, biomethane programme manager at GNI, to learn how many projects are currently in development and where farmers fit into the picture.

James Manley, country manager for international AD developer CycleØ, gave us an update on the status of their four plants in development across Ireland, along with insights into some of the planning challenges they are facing.

Finally, we spoke to Pat O'Brien, Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association farm business committee chair, to get his perspective on farmers’ attitudes toward the growing AD industry.
