Fresh herbs grown in Africa and Spain but labelled as Bord Bia quality assured Irish-origin produce have been withdrawn from Supervalu shelves, the retailer confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal.
The labelling of the fresh produce as Irish and the use of Bord Bia’s quality assurance mark on its packaging was the result of error, Supervalu has said.
The recalled batches are SuperValu Thai Style Curry Mix 30g (fresh herbs) and SuperValu Fresh Parsley 40g (fresh herbs) which included Kenyan and Spanish herbs.

“The products were labelled as Irish and carried the Bord Bia logo in error,” a spokesperson for Supervalu told the Irish Farmers Journal.
“This is a labelling issue only and there is no food safety or quality concerns with the products. We are working with our supplier to ensure this error does not recur and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Fines on table
Bord Bia has confirmed that it is investigating the matter, as it stated that the sanctions for misusing its quality assurance label include fines and suspension from Bord Bia schemes, even in cases of “genuine mislabelling error”.
“Bord Bia takes matters relating to mislabelling extremely seriously,” a spokesperson for Bord Bia told the Irish Farmers Journal.
“A site audit of the quality assured packer will take place tomorrow Wednesday 28 [January].
“The findings of the audit will not be made public as the audit process is confidential.”
Bord Bia said that only quality assured herbs grown and packed in the Republic of Ireland can carry the Bord Bia ‘Origin Ireland’ logo.
“Under the Bord Bia logo use policy, Bord Bia is entitled to impose sanctions for misuse of the Bord Bia quality mark logo,” the spokesperson continued.
“Sanctions may include but are not limited to fines and suspension from the scheme and can be imposed even in the case of a genuine mislabelling error.”
