Q. Who is eligible to apply under the scheme?

A. Farmers and agricultural/forestry contractors are eligible to apply.

Q. I am a farmer, am I eligible to apply?

A. For the majority of farmers, they must have submitted a Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) application in 2025 and must have been deemed an active farmer in 2025. Farmers must continue to farm in 2026 and submit a BISS application.

Farmers that don’t have to submit a BISS application, for example pig or poultry farmers, they must have been registered with DAFM as a producer in 2025 and in 2026.

Q. I am a first-time farmer, do I qualify?

A. New entrants who may not have a 2025 application can apply once a BISS 2026 application is made and they can demonstrate that they are actively farming. You may be asked to supply some details showing you are actively farming.

Q. I am a contractor, am I eligible to apply?

A. A contractor must provide agricultural or forestry services, be registered for VAT and be tax compliant. They must have operated as an agri/forestry contractor in 2025 and continue to in 2026.

Q. I am an agricultural contractor who is not registered for VAT, am I eligible?

A. No, you must be VAT registered to qualify for payment under the scheme.

Q. I am not a contractor, nor am I a farmer, but I am using green diesel for agricultural and food preparation, can I benefit under the scheme?

A. The scheme aim is to support both farmers and farm contractors, so in this case you would not be able to benefit under the scheme.

Q. If I am unable to make my application online, what can I do?

A. Where an applicant requires support with the application process, they can attend one of the forthcoming BISS clinics where a department official can assist in making the application, or alternatively they can call to the Department’s office in Old Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise.

Q. When can I apply for the scheme?

A. The scheme will open on 6 May and close on 27 May 2026. Details of how to apply can be found on the Department website here.

Q. I am a farmer; how do I apply?

A. A farmer under the scheme, applies in one of the following ways:

  • Applicant has made a 2025 or 2026 BISS application or is registered on MyAgFood.ie system. By using Department’s MyAgFood system, the applicant, or their FAS approved advisor, can submit the claim and will be required to supply the total MGO usage in litres for agricultural purposes in 2025.
  • Applicant does not submit a BISS application and is not registered on MyAgFood – Application applies by downloading the Fuel Support Scheme Farmer Application form. This form can be found on the Departments website under:

    Schemes and Payments – Other Schemes – Fuel Income Support Scheme.

  • Q. I am a farmer; do I need to upload receipts as part of my application?

    A. No receipts will not need to be submitted as part of your application; however, they must be available for inspection on request.

    Q. I am a contractor; how do I apply?

    A. A contractor can apply by downloading the Fuel Support Scheme Contractor application form.

    Q. I am a contractor, what Information and documentation do I need to include with my application?

    A. You will be required to submit your completed application along with receipts or an account summary from their MGO supplier(s) for the purchase of MGO consumed in 2025 for farming activities.

    Q. How do I estimate usage?

    A. Applicants will be required to provide the total litres of MGO used in 2025 solely for agricultural purposes. This historical information will be used as the basis for the estimation of the litres used in the impacted period in 2026.

    Q. I am a contractor who carries out agricultural and non-agricultural work, what usage should I declare on my application (in 2025 my total MGO usage was 9,000 litres and my contracting work was two-thirds agricultural and one-third non-agricultural)?

    A. In this case, the usage declared should be 6,000 litres.

    Q. What sort of evidence might I be asked to provide?

    A. Applicants can be asked to provide receipts or an account summary from their MGO supplier(s) for the purchase of MGO consumed in 2025 for farming activities. In the case of applicants who only purchase MGO from a supply once or twice a year, receipts dating back to October 2024 will be accepted.

    Applicants may be required upon request to submit documentation or invoices verifying agricultural or forestry contracting service provided to customers in support of their claim.

    Q. What name needs to be on the receipt / account summary?

    A. The person or the entity that purchased the MGO must be the applicant and therefore their name and address must be detailed on the receipt or account summary.

    Q. Is MGO purchased from a garage forecourt eligible?

    A. MGO purchased for farming activity during 2025, from a garage forecourt in the Republic of Ireland, is eligible providing the applicant can provide a copy of the receipts if requested.

    Q. Is MGO purchased outside the state eligible under the scheme?

    A. Only MGO purchased in the state is eligible under the scheme. For example, MGO purchased in the North is not eligible.

    Q. When will payment issue?

    A. Payment will issue as soon as possible after the closing date.

    Q. Is there a minimum and maximum payment under the scheme?

    A. The minimum payment under the scheme is €100. The maximum payment is not yet determined but will be dependent on overall application levels and cannot exceed state aid limits.
