A statutory instrument is being drawn up by the Department of Agriculture to extend country-of-origin labelling to loose meat products.
Loose meat is the non-prepacked raw meat produce typically sold at butcher counters and retail outlets. It does not include cured meat products such as rashers and sausages.
The legislation will see the country-of-origin labelling of pigmeat, sheepmeat, goatmeat and poultry.

The labelling is already in place for loose beef products.
Last October, the Irish Government notified the European Commission of its intention to adopt national measures to cover mandatory country-of-origin labelling of certain meats.
A statement from the Department of Agriculture said that it is currently working with the Department of Health on a statutory instrument to extend country-of-origin labelling to such products.
