Some weeks ago, we spent time with new Louth BETTER farmer Martin O’Hare, who will feature on the main BETTER farm page in this week’s Irish Farmers Journal. While last Thursday’s profiled farmer Padraig O’Connor’s immediate focus was on designing and implementing a fertiliser plan, Martin’s is slightly different.
He has put more of his tillage land into grass recently and is looking at cheap paddocking options. The team devised a cost-effective way for him to split up the main silage field on his home block, without inconveniencing the silage-making process. Read about how he did it in Thursday’s Irish Farmers Journal.
Rather frustratingly, Martin is terminal-heavy when it comes to bulling heifers for his spring-calving herd this year. As a result, he is on the market for a more maternal-type of heifer, with some buying completed in recent days.
