I farm: “Around 350 acres of fairly dry ground. We rent about 100 acres in three different lots. We have a 32-unit herringbone parlour for the milking.”

Dairy: “I am hoping to milk around 280 by the end of this calving season. We’re up from 235 since last year. We have Jersey crosses which are great milkers.”

Calving: “We calve everything around this time of year. We dry them off in late November to have them ready for calving around now. We run a team of 11 Jersey cross bulls but we use a fair bit of AI as well.”

This week: “We are hectic with calving at the moment. We are calving around 10 per day for the last few days. We have three lads working with us around calving time to take the pressure off. We have had a few casualties but that’s to be expected.”

Election results: “Look, I feel we are in a democracy and the people spoke. It is up to the politicians now to take responsibility to form a government. I have to say I’m not optimistic about it though. You could see another election in six months.”

Frank Kelly: “It is very sad to hear the news. I would have seen him down through the years in plays and theatre and not just in Father Ted. He was one of Ireland’s great actors but, as they say, there is a time for us all.”

Macra: “I would have been heavily involved back in the day. I learned so much there and it’s a great organisation. I’m hosting one of their farm walks on my farm next Saturday (12 March). I owe them a lot and I’m happy to help them out whenever I can so when they asked me to host it, I was only too happy to.”

Family: “I’m married to Grainne and then there is our son Jonathan. He is currently doing his masters in DCU but he gives a hand at the weekends.”

Quotable quote: “You’d prefer the weather to be better. It would fairly reduce stress levels for stock and man alike.”
