Minister for Trade and Employment Pat Breen launched the new training programme at the National Ploughing Championships this Tuesday, saying Teagasc will roll out sessions nationwide in the next few months.
A new version of the Farm Safety Code of Practice was published in June and includes new sections for slurry handling and harvesting. According to Teagasc, it is a legal requirement to complete and update the Farm Safety Code of Practice or to prepare a safety statement. Farmers have until the end of 2018 to meet the new requirements.
The circumstances for these accidents are created by the risk-taking culture that is all too prevalent in the farming community

“Tragically already this year 15 people have been killed in farm accidents. This is unacceptable,” said Minister Breen. ”The circumstances for these accidents are created by the risk-taking culture that is all too prevalent in the farming community. We need to reduce these accident rates and I believe that the safety training provided by Teagasc is an important element in achieving that,” he added, calling on farmers to attend the sessions to be scheduled around the country from October.
