With so many businesses now required to have rodent-free environments, poisoned rats and mice can become easy targets for birds of prey.

This is a concern, as it may result in predatory birds consuming dead or dying rodents treated with second-generation anti-coagulant rodenticides.

Research has shown that almost 80% of barn owls contain detectable traces of rodenticides, which could have significant implications for their health.

To help tackle this issue, the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) organised training courses last year to improve the awareness of good rodenticide use on farms and elsewhere. One point in the course was that the collection and disposal of dead rodents removes this easy food source for birds of prey.

CRRU Ireland is organising further Wildlife Aware training courses this year.

The courses will be IASIS-accredited and successful participants can display a CRRU/IASIS Wildlife Aware logo on their vehicles and stationery, says CRRU Ireland chair Mark Lynch.

“This logo will indicate that the holder works to the highest standards of effective pest control, with minimum impact on wildlife and the wider environment,” says Mark.

Wildlife Aware courses will be held on:
