Eugene is a well known face in Kenmare Mart, where he has been working for the past 10 years. Still a very active man, Eugene travels to work in his bike and puts down a full day at the mart,

The birthday party was organised by the mart and came as a surprise to Eugene.

"We told him he was getting an award from ICOS but that was it," mart manager Dan McCarthy told the Farmers Journal, "he didn't expect the crowd that turned out but he took to it like a duck to water. The crowd clapped for five minutes when he got his award.

"He's a local legend and a great character," Dan continued. "We decided to honour him because he has been an important part of the community for 90 years."

According to Dan, Eugene worked many jobs before joining the mart.

"He was a farm labourer, mostly, but he also delivered coal and packed wool," said Dan. "He was a butcher too."

"If you were stuck for a man to help with the silage, you called Eugene," said Dan. "He's a great man for a day's work. He never worries about starting or finishing time."

Dan won't be letting Eugene retire in the near future.

"He has no intention of retiring," said Dan. "What would I be retiring for boy, is what he'd say to you."

Drive on, Eugene!
