Out of the 16,400 dairy farmers who applied to the Bord Bia Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS), 3,605 are not yet certified. The Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed gave a breakdown of the number of applicants and certified farmers on a county-by-county basis in response to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fáil agricultural spokesperson Charlie McConalogue.
“This is a voluntary scheme and, as such, there are no direct consequences for not joining,” Creed said. “However, it should be noted that certification under the scheme also meets the EU regulatory requirements in respect of hygiene on the farm. Non-participants must have these requirements separately verified by their milk purchaser.
