I had a call during the week about a stock bull that was purchased with 5 stars and on the most recent evaluation run he has dropped to 3-star level.

The farmer is in the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) and is wondering what to do.

Unfortunately, the bull wasn’t genotyped at the point of purchase so this means that the bull is ineligible for the BDGP scheme.

If you are in the scheme and need to purchase a stock bull, make sure he is a genotyped as a 4- or 5-star bull on the maternal or terminal index.

If you are buying at a sale, ICBF-generated catalogues have a genotype stamp on the bull’s page if he has been genotyped and the genotye is included in the bull’s evaluation.

Buying a genotyped bull will also mean that the reliability is higher, so you can have more confidence in the figures
