Enforcement of the old consumer protection legislation has been increased recently and has gathered media attention, as imported butter such as Kerrygold disappears from supermarket shelves.

The law states that retail butter offered for sale in the Midwestern state must be labelled with a Wisconsin or federal grade mark.

“This effectively excludes Kerrygold butter being sold in Wisconsin because Kerrygold butter is graded, produced and packaged in Ireland,” Ornua told the Irish Farmers Journal last month.

The online petition is addressed to governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker and has received over 400 signatures so far. The petition describes the laws as “outdated” and calls for the legislation to be repealed.

It’s the best butter in the world and the healthiest

“It places undue limitation on consumers who wish to purchase high quality, imported grass fed or domestic artisanal butter. These imported or artisanal standards go above and beyond what the Grade A or AA standard requires,” the petition states.

One signatory commented: “It’s the best butter in the world and the healthiest. I was brought up on it and now I’m 68 years of age and healthy.”
