Finally we are seeing some leadership on funding the ICBF. While some will no doubt play politics, a model that will ensure all breeding herds contribute is positive. With 40,000 of the 65,000 suckler herds running less than 10 cows, the typical suckler farmer contribution will be less than €4 per annum. For a typical 70-cow dairy herd, it will be just €26.60.

This week Jack Kennedy goes into detail on the challenges facing the ICBF on contracts for semen. The way the organisation handled the issue has put board structure in the spotlight. Were proper governance procedures adhered to in discussions around LIC contracts and was the chair informed of potential conflict of interests of board members? It is essential that those around the board table representing farmers that are funding the organisation ensure the future direction of the national breeding programme is focused on delivering for commercial farmers and not steered by politics.
