This is your chance to write the safety pages of Safe Family Farms brought to you by the Irish Farmers Journal and ESB Networks.

Up until 1 March we are inviting individuals and groups to submit their 300 word essay style proposals. This essay style proposal should outline what you will write about, photograph and film to raise awareness of farm safety in a double page spread in the Irish Farmers Journal. Three lucky winners will be shortlisted and given 6 weeks to complete their proposed project.

Each of the winning schools will receive a visit from the Safe Family Farms team of the Irish Farmers Journal and ESB Networks. Their 1,200 (approx) words will be edited by the Irish Farmers Journal team and their video footage will also be edited before being published online.

Entries can be on an individual basis, as a group or class and should outline how they believe we can change behavior and raise awareness of farm safety at farm level and right across rural Ireland. The following themes of innovation, electricity, education and family may help to prepare your entry. Or focus on what would you do to avoid risk on a farm? What story would your team tell to raise awareness of farm safety? What checklist would you use at farm level to encourage the whole family to take farm safety more seriously? What innovation would you introduce at farm level that can eliminate the risk of accidents from certain tasks on the farm? It is up to you to decide how best you can use these two pages of the Irish Farmers Journal to make farming a safer place to work. Why not get your Ag Science teacher involved?

The winning entries project will be published on the Safe Family Farms page of the Irish Farmers Journal and on the Farm Safety channel of farmersjournal.ie. This will include approximately 1,200 words accompanied by photography and an online video produced by the entrants.

Our specialists often shoot short videos using their smart phones. This is an opportunity for your farm safety groups/classes to do the same. Support your farm safety advice with a short video of the group/class members outlining how your innovations can make a difference at farm level. This will be professionally edited by our team and will accompany the online article. The Irish Farmers Journal communicates on all media, the farm safety message must do the same.

All entries should be emailed to competition@farmersjournal.ie with "Safe Family Farm" in the subject or posted to Safe Family Farms Essay Competition, The Irish Farmers Journal, Irish Farm Centre, Bluebell, Dublin 12. The three winning entries will be notified by the 13 of March to begin their Safe Family Farms pages.
