Scott was beaten by Jack Fagan, son of shearing legend and Shearing Sports New Zealand chair Sir David Fagan and Masterton shearer Paerata Abraham, who went head to head in the final.

Despite being beaten by Paerata Abraham, 24-year-old Fagan went on to claim the title after Abraham was disqualified for exceeding the quality benchmark in the final shear over two sheep each.

The speed shear at the end of the second day of the four-day World Shearing Championships in ILT Stadium Southland, New Zealand attracted 59 open competitors. Some 41 entered the senior event which was won by Hugh de Lacy, of North Canterbury, the first winner decided at the championships.

Fagan said he felt the pain experienced by Abraham who shore his two sheep in the final in front of about 1,600 spectators in 53.944 seconds.

“We’ve all been there,” said Fagan.
