Met Éireann recorded higher than average rainfall at most of its weather stations in September thanks to Atlantic frontal systems that included Storm Aileen.

Rainfall levels ranged from 92% of average at Malin Head, Co Donegal, where 88.4mm of rain fell, to 183% of normal at Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, where 160.8mm fell during the month.

The lowest amount of rain recorded during September was at Casement Aerodrome in Co Dublin, where 70.5mm fell, up to 204.4mm at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry. Valentia station recorded its wettest September since 2006.

Wettest day

The month’s wettest day was also recorded at Valentia, when 39.8mm fell in a single day on 2 September.

The number of rain days in the month ranged from 20 days at Dublin Airport to 27 days at Belmullet, Co Mayo, while Newport in Co Mayo recorded 24 wet days (1mm or more) and Valentia recorded seven very wet days (10mm or more).

All mean air temperatures were below their long-term average for the month, according to Met Éireann.

Temperatures

The month’s lowest temperatures were recorded on 17 September, when the lowest air minimum of 1.0°C was reported at Mount Dillon, Co Roscommon and the lowest grass minimum of -1.4°C was reported at Markree, Co Sligo.

Oak Park in Co Carlow recorded the highest maximum temperature on 3 September of 23.4°C.
