A quad was stolen from a dairy farm in Charleville, Co Cork, last night. The quad is a red Yamaha 350 and has been described by the owner as being slightly faded from the sun.

The quad had a basket on the front and a yellow sprayer on the back – these were removed from the quad before it was taken, Rachel Lynch, who farms with her father John, told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Rachel said that the quad was parked in the milking parlour overnight.

“They walked in, took the basket and sprayer off the quad, left them on the ground. Then they wheeled it out of the parlour.

“They cut our road fence then and drove it on to a trailer,” she said.

She said that there has been a few quad thefts in the area recently; a neighbour’s quad was stolen and another’s was tampered with too.

Demand for Garda text alert scheme

Meanwhile, news of the quad theft comes as figures show that the number of people signing up to a text alert service from their local gardaí has more than doubled in just three years.

Figures released by the Garda Crime Prevention National Centre of Excellence show that as of April 2017, a total of 1,085 text alert schemes exist around the country, including 191,181 individual subscribers.

This compares with 80,000 subscribers that were registered in April 2014.
