Speaking today following the announcement, Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill said he had previously asked the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, to implement the State aid measure which would give the factory the chance to obtain a short-term loan to cover costs.
He said mushroom factories all over the country are now facing financial challenges in the wake of Brexit and huge losses.
“Nine in every 10 mushrooms grown in Ireland are exported to the UK. 3,500 jobs are at risk in 60 companies if these challenges with sterling exchange rates continue,” he said.
Cahill is now calling on the Minister to implement a support mechanism to help the sector move into a “post-Brexit world”.
