The transfer of EU law into UK law after Brexit in the form of a Great Repeal Bill was discussed by the leaders of the four main UK farming unions in a meeting in Co Down on Friday morning.

The unions have said that Brexit presents an opportunity to review regulations that affect farmers to allow agriculture to function under an “efficient and streamlined regulatory system”.

However, Ulster Farmers’ Union president Barclay Bell acknowledged: “It [regulation changes] must not jeopardise our future trading relationship with Europe.”

The four UK unions are set to meet IFA president Joe Healy in the afternoon.

Healy said that importance of the UK market for Irish agriculture and potential issues with the Irish border would be discussed at the meeting.

“We will be working closely as the Brexit negotiations evolve to insist that our political leaders have farming and food at the heart of the discussions,” he said.
