Ultra low sulphur diesel

As mentioned previously, all diesel supplied for use in agricultural tractors since 31 March 2011 must meet the standards that are generally described as ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD).

The association continues to receive reports that users in some parts of the country are having difficulty obtaining the correct fuel. Under the relevant regulations, only ULSD should be supplied by fuel distributors to customers where the fuel is intended for use by what is termed non-road mobile machinery. This includes agricultural machinery such as tractors, harvesters and loaders.

Farmers and contractors should ensure that they are being supplied with the correct fuel and should make it clear to their suppliers that the fuel is required for agricultural use and that the supplier may be held liable for any issues arising from the supply of an incorrect fuel. The manufacturers of some models of tractors state clearly that only ULSD is to be used in the machines and a failure to do so may invalidate warranties. All suppliers of fuel should be willing to specify the grade of fuel supplied on the delivery docket and invoice.

The position is very clear – fuel suppliers can legally only supply ULSD for use in mobile agricultural machinery and such fuel is the only fuel that can legally be used in such machinery.

Training closing dates

The closing date for receipt of completed applications for the two training courses being offered by the FTMTA in October and aimed at those working in the parts and services areas of the farm machinery industry is Friday 18 September.

The parts profit management course will run over three consecutive Tuesdays – 6, 13 and 20 October. The aim of the course is to develop a “best in class” parts department that is positioned to deliver the maximum value within the overall business.

The best practice service department course will be held over two consecutive Wednesdays – 7 and 14 October.

The objective of this course is to define, demonstrate and explain the roles and systems within the service department in line with best industry practices.

Further information and booking forms for both courses, which are open to member and non-member firms of the association, can be accessed on the homepage of the association’s website at www.ftmta.ie or by contacting Michal Fahy in the FTMTA office on 045-409309 or at membership@ftmta.ie.
