Further tonnages of skim milk powder (SMP) have been placed in the European Commission’s public intervention measure this week by member states.

The latest data from the EU Milk Market Observatory (MMO) show that a further 1,011t of SMP was placed in the measure last week.

This latest offering brings the total amount of SMP offered to the measure, to date this year, to 3,680t.

Last week, Germany (192t), Lithuania (467t) and the Netherlands (352t) placed SMP in intervention. Ireland, to date this year, has not offered any powder to the measure.

Tender process

Meanwhile, at the seventh sale of SMP in intervention last week, no product was sold. All offers were once again rejected by the European Commission.

The monthly sale of SMP, which took place on 20 April, saw two bids rejected.

Both bids came from Poland: one for 40t at €1,632.60/t and the second for 200t offered €1,380/t.

In the first tender earlier this year, only 40t of powder was sold.

This year, there is enough capacity for 109,000t of SMP to be placed in intervention from EU member states at the intervention price of €1,698/t.
