It is not a good idea to store a hedge cutter outside. The first thing to suffer will be the exposed chrome on the hedge cutter's hydraulic rams. This is expensive to replace and if not replaced or repaired will shed the hydraulic rams seals. The general condition of the hedge cutter is a good indication of the previous owner's attitude towards maintenance.

Inspect the oil level and quality (and if the sight glass is not leaking). The hydraulic oil should be clear or golden, not milky or black. The latter two would indicate water or dirt contamination. Neither is good for the hedge cutter's hydraulic pumps or motors. Most modern machines specify hydraulic oil-46.

Most contractor-type hedge cutters will have electric controls. They are reliable and comfortable to use during long days. Watch out for crushed connections, pinched wiring and a lose joystick. Hedge cutters stored outside will suffer from corrosion and bad circuit contacts. Electrical trouble can be one of the most annoying problems. 90% of this trouble is down to poor storage.

Picture 4

The life of a hedge cutter is a tough one so thoroughly check the mainframe and arm for signs of cracking or breaking. At the pivot points on the arms, check for damage. The wear pads on the telescopic arm are replaceable, or adjustment can eliminate the problem.

Picture 5

The business end of any hedge cutter is the rotor. Examine flail mounting brackets for wear because bolts holes can often become dangerously elongated to the point of losing a flail. Cracking to the rotor hood is generally caused by rotor vibration from it being out of balance. This crack is often found in the front canopy. Check the rear depth roller and bearings are in good condition.

When looking at a secondhand machine it can be hard to get brackets to suit the tractor. Some machines are offered for sale with brackets. This will save around €2,000.

Expect to pay

Many McConnel PA 7700 T machines will fetch €16,000 plus VAT if they are in good condition.
