The Gorey Show was bigger and better than ever this year, with the sunshine falling in its favour. Cars and horseboxes started flowing through the gates well before the show kicked off.

Friesian

The Hurley cup is an annual Friesian class that is presented to the best cow in milk – the award going to Philip Jones this year from Killowen, Gorey, Co. Wexford. His Hallow herd was a familiar sight on the podium as he also claimed the champion Friesian rosette. Conor Morley is a joint owner of the winner and it was the herd’s first time in a showing ring this year. The cow was born in March 2012 with Altar Amazing the sire and The Valley Dundee Frost EX94 the dam.

The Rothwell cup was presented to the best heifer in milk and the winning Heifer also claimed the reserve champion rosette. Gary Hurley from Clonpadden, Arklow, Co. Wicklow won this award.

Belgian Blue

Melvin Masterson claimed the top spot in the Belgian Blue class. Masterson is from Rathnure, Co. Wexford and won with Boroside Jack Daniels, who is from the sire Craic and the dam Rosemount Deer.

The reserve champion was awarded to Shay Hayden, Monasootha, Camolin, Co. Wexford. Hayden’s Heifer was born in September and is from the sire Gemina 1 De Foz and the dam Clonard girl.

Aberdeen Angus

Joe and Michael Moran from Powerstown, Goresbridge, Co. Kilkenny claimed the top prize in the Angus ring with their stock bull from the Kilkenny Irish Angus herd. It was their first show of the year.

Second went to Eamon McKiernan from Newtown, Monasterboice, Drogheda, Co. Louth. His Angus bull had Lord Rocket as the dam and Mogeely Joe as the sire.

Charolais

Kildare woman, Bernadette Dunne, took home the champion Charolais title at this year’s Gorey show. Dunne’s calf born after 1 September 2016, is from the dam Crockaun Holly and the sire Derryolam Impeccible.

Dunne also claimed the reserve champion title through her herd’s bull calf. From Martinstown, Curragh, Co. Kildare, the dam and sire of the bull calf were the same as her champion.

Hereford

There was very tough competition for pedigree Hereford breeders as big money was up for grabs on the day. The Kilsunny herd brought home the champion rosette after a plethora of classes in ring one. Trevor Dudley from Dovea, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. took the title. His winning heifer’s dam is Kilsunny Lass Gem and the sire is Glaslough judge.

The thriving Hereford and Angus pedigree herd from Eamon McKiernan’s farm, took home the reserve champion place. The sire of his winning bull calf is Trillick Hotspur and the Dam is Boyana Stacy.

Parthenaise

The Parthenaise breed was out in good force, with a good number of entries. Kyle Kate was the winning heifer on the day. The winner was bred by Paddy Doyle, Kyle, Bunclody, Co. Wexford. It’s sire is Faucon and the dam is Camellia.

The reserve champion went to Alaster Swift from Monfin, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. Swift’s pedigree heifer was born in October 2016, it’s sire is Crannagh Elerzar EZC and the dam is IE371550380098.

Commercial Cattle

The Masterson herd was in winning form a again in the Commercial ring. Melvin Masterson from Rathnure, Co. Wexford, won the champion title with his Limousin cross bull calf. The sire was TVR and the dam was a purebred Belgian Blue.

The reserve champion title went to Derry Rothwell from Fairwood, Tinahely, Co. Wicklow.
