In Bonniconlon, Co Mayo, the weather held up for one of the largest shows in the west of Ireland, despite a strong wind warning from Met Éireann.

Tens of thousands of visitors thronged the aisles and enjoyed the sunshine, the music and the competitions.

Shorthorn cattle were among the first classes to be judged in the morning, with the sound of pipe bands playing at the showgrounds.

The crowds of farmers and families on the showgrounds included local beef farmer Tom Keane, pictured here with sons and nephews on the Irish Farmers Journal's stand.

The competition was fierce among the exhibitors as well as the livestock entrants, with a grill offering Argentinian beef setting up beside the Irish Farmers Journal’s stand.

But our beef markets specialist Phelim O'Neill photographed the neighbouring tents at an angle that showed our international competitor flying the Irish Farmers Journal's flag, restoring Ireland's honour.

Bonniconlon is also a meeting point for country music lovers, and visitors could be seen jiving in their wellies throughout the day.
