Met Éireann has issued a nationwide status yellow snow and ice warning which will be in effect from 11pm Saturday 9 March until Monday 11 March.

Thundery showers, hail, sleet and snow are expected during that period with slippery and icy conditions.

The northern half of the country is expected to be the worst affected, with prolonged heavy showers overnight.

Wind warning

Met Éireann has also warned that there is a status yellow wind warning in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick on Sunday 10 March from 4am until midnight.

Winds from the west to northwest will reach average speeds of between 50km/h to 65km/h. Gusts will reach up to 110km/h in coastal regions.

Housing cattle

Both warnings will upset many farmers who were hoping for a dry spell after the recent rain last week.

Farmers are asked to not take risks during the icy period and make as much provision as possible in terms of feeding cattle or lagging pipes before the cold snap hits.
