Averages for bulls rose by £1,058 on the equivalent sale in 2016, with a clearance of 91% seeing 114 of the 125 bulls forward finding new homes.

This demand was mainly driven by the commercial farmers, with only a handful of breeders’ bulls forward.

Topping the Sunday's sale with a price tag of 30,000gns was Swalesmoor Liam from the Swalesmoor Partnership in Lauderdale.

One of the youngest bulls catalogued, having been born in October 2015, Liam is an embryo son of Cloughead Umpire while the dam is a Nebo Favourite cow which was purchased for 9,000gns.

This heavily muscled young bull was secured in a two-way split by Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton, along with Richard Harker.

Junior bulls

It was a day for the junior bulls, with the junior champion and reserve sharing the second-top price of 22,000gns.

The overall junior champion was Swardland Likelylad from A and D Protor’s Swarland herd.

This September 2015-born son of Fairywater Haig Eab was met with a flurry of bids before finally selling to Neil Barclay, Aberdeenshire.

Matching him at the same money was the reserve junior champion Gunnerfleet Lion from J Handley.

Homebred on both sides, this young bull opened at 20,000gns before coming to a halt at 22,000gns to the noted Whinfellpark herd.

Taking the overall championship the previous day under judge Rob Kirton who runs the Ashledge herd was the intermediate champion Foxhillfarm Louisvuitton. Exhibited by the Alford family, he is sired by Guards Boomer going back to the prolific Bankdale Alice on the maternal side. He sold at 20,000gns to John Penny, Leeds.

The reserve intermediate champion and subsequently reserve overall champion Maraiscote Lothario was next in line, selling for 19,000gns. Bred by J and JF Nimmo, Lotharion is sired by Goldies Comet and out of a Virginia Andy-bred cow.

A and J Gammie with their August 2015-born Westpit Lowry were next in line.

Son of Ardglasson Highlander, he is out of Brockhurst Holy, a full sister to Brockhurst Heavenly, this year’s Yorkshire show interbreed champion. Having secured first in his class at the pre-sale show, the stylish bull sold to J and JF Nimmo for 18,000gns.

Northern Ireland

Top of the Northern Irish exhibitors was Derek Hume with his first prize-winner Culnagechan Lazio securing 17,000gns.

Lazio is a son of Ampertaine Elgin and out of Culnagechan Celine, who also bred the 48,000gns Culnagechan Falcon.

There will be further prices and pictures from the Carlisle sale in this week’s Irish Farmers Journal.
