Dozens of farmers and agricultural contractors from all over Ireland will descend on Kiltale, Co Meath, on Saturday 6 May to attempt to set a new world record for silage harvesting.

They are aiming to pick up 100 acres of grass in 10 minutes with self-propelled forage harvesters.

The Great Grass Event is being run by Combines 4 Charity and supported by Profi.

The Combines 4 Charity group was first formed in 2009 to establish a new Guinness World Record and raise money for charity.

Their original record of 184 combines working simultaneously in one field was broken in 2010 by the Canadians, who had 200 combines working.

However, the Irish record was reclaimed in 2012 when 208 combines worked the field at the same time.

They’re off!

Gates open at 10am for the Great Grass Event, with the day’s activities starting at 12:30pm and the world record attempt planned for 2:30pm, weather depending.

Admission is €10 and kids go free.

The charities

All proceeds from the event will go to a number of chosen chrities, including Barnardos, the independent charity that works with vulnerable children and campaigns for the rights of all children; Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, Drogheda, which provides counselling and support for families affected by cancer; and the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, which is a specialist hospital for spinal injuries.
