This is the 23rd year in a row that Paddy O’Brien has hosted his annual event in the southeast and it continues to attract a regular clientele and new friends to the region. Paddy was among the pioneers of these annual celebrations and, from the outset, his gatherings have attracted a loyal contingent of supporters from various parts of England, Scotland and around the island of Ireland.

“Our first weekend will be held in Lawlor’s Hotel, Dungarvan, on 17 to 19 February. Joining the band and I will be Patrick Feeney and band, Shawn Cuddy and band, Gareth Pritchard, Louise Morrissey, Trudi Lalor, Caitlin, TR Dallas, Tradstone, New West and Pat Tobin,” says Paddy.

“The following weekend, 24 to 26 February, sees us at the Clayton Whites Hotel in Wexford town. We will be joined there by Patrick Feeney, Jimmy Buckley, Robert Mizzell, Thomas Maguire and Fhiona Ennis, Tony Theresa and the Stars, and Pat Tobin.

The February shows have become a special part of life over the years. They are like a big family reunion in many respects. So many people put these dates in their diary year on year. Many friendships have been forged over the last two decades. And, of course, it is always nice to welcome new people each year.”

Paddy hails from Aglish in the lovely Blackwater Valley. He is a loyal son of the Déise and is a passionate supporter of hurling in Waterford.

Hurling fanatic

“Hurling is part of life and tradition down here. Players like John Mullane, Tony Browne, Ken McGrath, Paul Flynn and Dan Shanahan to name just a few were top-class hurlers and that team had a great bond with the supporters.

“I am delighted to see a new fresh crop coming through in great style. Austin Gleeson is a superb talent and we were all delighted to see the county win the All-Ireland U-21 title in Thurles back in September. I believe this Waterford team will be very much in the top mix of teams over the next few years. It would be great to see them win the Liam McCarthy Cup.”

Tour dates

Paddy is also planning for a four-concert tour which starts in the Arts Centre in Kilworth (Co Cork) on 23 March. The other shows are in the Brú Ború, Cashel, on 30 March, Túar Árd, Moate, on 27 April, and the Lee Valley Hotel, Macroom, on 27 May. He will be joined by guests on all four shows.

Meanwhile, his immediate focus is firmly on ensuring all patrons will enjoy these annual ventures in Dungarvan and Wexford. “The first band will be on stage each night at 9.30pm. We also have afternoon dancing on both Saturdays and Sundays from 3pm to 5pm. As usual, tickets for all dances will also be available at the door.”

Admission to nightly dance is €20 and afternoon is €10. Further information can be had from Lawlor’s Hotel at 058-41122 or Clayton Whites at 053-912 2311, as well as on Paddy’s website on www.paddyobrien.com.
