Oakpark Foods, a secondary pig processing and bacon company, has launched the final phase in a major €3m investment in traceability systems at its facility in Cahir, Co Tipperary.

Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture Tom Hayes helped announce the new investment. The new system will provide traceability on all products in the facility.

David Brett, general manager of Oakpark foods, said: “Our policy is to maximise the efficiency of our factory so that we can compete with leading international players both domestically and internationally. Our future plans are to continue to grow the company, aiming for higher market shares in both Ireland and the UK, with an increased emphasis on value-added products.”

Oakpark is part of the Brett Group, which has been in business since 1939. The group is a major supplier of farm inputs to thousands of farmers across the southeast. The animal feed mill and the central grain assembly plant are located in Callan, Co Kilkenny.

Sunglen Pig Farm is a sister company in the group and it fattens 39,000 pigs per year for processing in Cahir. Oakpark also purchases €13m of Bord Bia Quality Assured pork from Irish slaughterhouses annually.
