It’s set to be a dog’s life this Sunday at Oldbridge Estate in County Meath; to wrap up Heritage Week a Native Dog Breeds of Ireland event is being held at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre.

A procession of Ireland’s native dog breeds will start at 2pm.

The dogs will be led by costumed characters from various historical periods and accompanied by renowned uillean piper Eoin Dillion.

Guest speakers, including animal behaviourist Jim Stephens, will commentate on each breed’s history during the procession.

All of the nine native Irish dog breeds will be present; the Irish wolfhound, the Irish wheaten terrier, the red and white Setter, the red setter, the Irish terrier, the Irish water spaniel, the Kerry blue terrier, the Kerry beagle and the Glen of Imaal terrier.

The event is organised by the Office of Public Works (OPW), the Irish Wolfhound Club and the Irish Kennel Club.

Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs, but they must be on leads at all times. Fun activity sheets for children with prizes to be won are also part of the day’s events.
