Folk Like Us – A Family in Music will make its debut on Wednesday night, 28 January, at 7.30pm. It can also be accessed on Freesat 402. The Murphys, who hail from Killorglin, have been busy in recent weeks, researching and preparing for this series which features the songs and stories of many of the best-known families in country music, including some iconic American country legends.

“We are really excited about the series, which will run over three months out to April,” says Candy Murphy.

“It has been an education delving into the history of the families and the songs that made them famous. You get caught up in the charm of the songs and the eras in which they came to prominence.

“Many of these great families that we focus on have inspired our own musical journey. We are most grateful to so many people in the business who have cooperated so willingly with providing material for these shows.

“We filmed the various episodes on both sides of the Irish Sea and we feel viewers will be very pleased with how things have turned out. Each show sees us perform live some well-known and some original songs as well. We are so thrilled to have been asked to present this show and it is a truly unique and exciting venture for our own family.”

The Murphys comprise of three sisters, Cindy (lead singer), Candy and Katie and their dad, Pat.

A few years ago, while they were based in England, they were chosen as the Irish representatives at the CMA Global Artists Party in Nashville.

“The show remains one of the special highlights of our career,” reflects Candy. “We got a standing ovation from the board of directors when we finished our set of original material. It was a brilliant night, the kind that stays in the memory.”

The Streets of Promise album has received much acclaim since its release some months ago.

“We had two self penned hits with The Streets of Promise and The Empty Room in 2014. Those songs were co-writes with my sister Katie. She is a joy to work with and it is the easiest thing in the world to write with her. We are currently working on other songs and it has reached the stage now where I think I would find it hard to write on my own again,” says the girl who penned My Connemara Marble Ring when she was just 16-years-old.

The new television series is a pre-runner for the Meet the Murphys - The Streets of Promise Concert Tour 2015, which gets underway around the country in April. The family will be joined by three other musicians for what promises to be a show with a difference.

“There’s nothing we love better than getting out there on the stages and bringing our music to the people. One thing we are very proud of is that our entire show features live music. We don’t do backing tracks. People appreciate that and it is much easier to generate a rapport with audiences when your heart and soul is in every note and every word. Country and folk is our style and we are so much looking forward to taking the show to various parts of the island of Ireland. All the details in relation to venues will be announced in the next three weeks,” says Candy.

They hope the response they got from audiences at their two appearances at the Highland Radio concerts in Letterkenny, in recent months, is indicative of what awaits them when they hit the road in April.

“We just went out on stage and gave it all we had. The crowd must have liked what we did because we got standing ovations on both nights.”

The Murphys face a busy schedule in the coming weeks, filming the remainder of Folk Like Us, recording some new songs and preparing material for their Meet The Murphys concert tour.

“That’s the way we want it,” says Candy. “Music is at the heart of our lives. It is what we love and what guides us every day and it’s brilliant to have the chance to bring our music to so many people through these television shows.”
