An all-female silage crew is being assembled in Co Waterford for a new Guinness world record attempt in August.

The Mount Melleray Community Silage Weekend is an annual event and in the past has featured a combination of modern and vintage machinery.

This year, chief organiser John O'Brien is pulling out all the stops by putting together an all-female silage crew to cut its silage and raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

So far, the group has recruited a lengthy list of ladies from all over Waterford and Tipperary to cut and draw silage:

  • Kathleen Denn O’Grady, silage harvester.
  • Alison Hunt, Cashel, Claas tractor.
  • Joan Dahill, Glencairn, Ford tractor.
  • Cynthia Murphy, Kilkenny, tractor.
  • Catriona Tobin, Ardfinnan, tractor.
  • Mary Kearney Leddy, Araglin, Ford tractor.
  • Roisin O’Rourke, Melleray, tractor.
  • Chloe Barron, Knockanore, Deutz tractor.
  • Charlotte Connors, Affane, Deutz tractor.
  • Ciara Cliffe, Ballinamult, Ford tractor.
  • Aoife Landers, Cappagh, Ford/John Deere tractor.
  • Orla Browne, Cappagh, John Deere tractor.
  • Enda Roche, Colligan, John Deere tractor.
  • Roisin O’Donnell, Poulmucka, Massey tractor.
  • Pearl Bates, Ardfinnan, John Deere tractor.
  • Cherry Bates, Ardfinnan, tractor.
  • Ciara Shine, Ardfinnan, Ford tractor.
  • Mary O’Brien, Dromana, John Deere tractor.
  • The organisers say they still have plenty of room for more “grass gals”, but anyone interested in getting involved must have sourced their own machinery.

    All-female mechanics

Backing up the silage ladies will be a team of lady mechanics.

The Socket Rockets, the only ladies team in the country capable of rebuilding a vintage tractor in a matter of minutes, will be giving a demonstration at the silage event. The team has proven it can rebuild a Ferguson 20 in well under 12 minutes and will be re-building a classic tractor at Mount Melleray.

    Charity

All proceeds from the event on 19 August will be going to the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland.
