However, after failing to empty the till, one of the thieves decided ice cream was the next most valuable thing and made off with a basket full of it.

Division Street dairy owner, Ivan told stuff.co.nz, "They were wandering around outside the shop front, waiting for people to leave the store.

"Then they came back with their faces covered up and raised their weapons," he said.

Ivan said he used a fire extinguisher to protect himself and "blasted away" the thieves, who raided the shop late on Thursday night.

Police in New Zealand are currently investigating the aggravated robbery and said there were no injuries.
